Greetings CUE Members,

We hope you enjoy the latest installment of the CUE Newsletter. It's been a while since you last heard from us, but we hope you had a great summer and fall!

This issue marks the formal departure of Ricardo Acuña, SOA Film '96, and Ed McGinty, SOA Film '06, as CUE's inaugural founders and Co-Chairs, though they'll remain involved in CU Alumni affairs in other capacities, Ricardo, on the Board of Columbia SoCal, and Ed as a contributor to New York-based Alumni efforts.

We'd like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Ricardo and Ed for their leadership and hard work, and wanted to note a few of CUE's accomplishments, since its inception in 2006:
  • Hosting successful, well-attended events, including supporting and co-promoting the annual Columbia Student Film Festival in LA, the Columbia Actors Showcase, and networking parties and social events, culminating in the 2008 Annual Holiday party co-hosted by NYU, with over 400 in attendance
  • Creating new programming, including establishing CUE Writing Groups and launching the upcoming Screenplay Reading Series
  • Keeping members informed of fellow Alumni work via email blasts, the Newsletter, and the CUE-Network website, including featured interviews with high-profile Alumni such as Simon Kinberg, Kimberly Pierce, and Kathryn Bigelow
  • Continuing to build Membership, which is at 350 and growing
  • Strengthening bonds with the SOA Office of Alumni Affairs and the SoCal (CUAASC) Alumni organization for continued mutual support and promotion of Alumni efforts

Stepping into Ricardo and Ed's shoes as new Co-Chairs are current Board Members NaRhee Ahn, SOA Film '99 and Scott Foster, SOA Film'98.  NaRhee is a writer/director who moved to Los Angeles in 2006 to promote her feature film "Purity." Her responsibility on the Board has been as the Newsletter Editor.  Scott is a writer/producer who also works at UTA.  He has been the Events Director for CUE since 2007.

NaRhee likes to think of CUE as a collaborative effort. "My focus is on helping Los Angeles-based SOA Alumni get better access to information, networking, and opportunities to get to the next level in their careers.  It's a tough world out there and it's up to us Alumni to help each other and be part of a real community." Scott adds, "It sort of amazed me when I first came to LA, that there was no Alumni group for film students in LA to keep that community connected.  CUE was our response to what was missing.  There's strength in numbers in this business - even if you're feeling dejected about where you are in your career, or about the challenging economic climate the business has been facing, you aren't going to find solutions by yourself.  With CUE you can start actively networking with like-minded people and feel empowered by doing something about it.  CUE is still taking shape, and we welcome fellow Alumni to be architects in the kinds of events we want to do."

We hope to have a smooth transition and welcome our new CUE Co-Chairs!

Please feel free to contact either NaRhee or Scott at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with your ideas, announcements or concerns.

In addition, we held a recent meeting that welcomed new members from Columbia College and Barnard, recruited at the recent SoCal (CUAASC) Alumni mixer at the J Lounge in September, and we plan to host a New Members Mixer in mid-January, so we’ll keep you posted on those upcoming details.

We're also excited that we've expanded our involvement with Theatre/Acting Alumni, with the CUE Actors Group headed by Chris Maddox, Noel Arthur, and Tonya Jones, and CUE was happy to help promote the CU Actors Showcase in Los Angeles in May.  We are also pleased to feature an interview in this issue with Theatre Alumnus Director Robert O'Hara, by Chris Maddox.

Keep in touch, let us know what you're up to, and Happy Holidays to all!
